One of my favorite elegant appetizers to make for holiday evenings is roasted pears with blue cheese. It’s a simple snack to enjoy with a glass of white wine.
These pears make a great side dish on their own, and they go great with blue cheese. It’s a classic flavor combination that’s often used in a pear sauce.
In my opinion, pears and blue cheese are a classic flavor combination. The sweet crunch of a perfectly ripe pear combined with the salty, creamy, savory blue cheese is bliss.
Try it, it makes a great snack.
Blue cheese or bleu cheese is a cheese that contains the mold Penicillium. Gorgonzola is a specific type of blue cheese from Northern Italy.
Both blue cheese and gorgonzola are extensively used in cooking and are very popular with wine and food. Gorgonzola has a unique taste and appearance that makes it ideal for this appetizer.
Pears are the perfect cheese pairing because they are both sharp and salty with a strong smell. It’s delightfully funky.

How to Make Roasted Pears with Blue Cheese
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Slice the pears in half lengthwise.
Remove the core and seeds from each pear with a small sharp paring knife or melon baller, leaving a round well for the filling.
Trim off a small slice from the rounded sides of each pear half so that they will sit in the baking dish without wobbling.
Arrange the pears, core side up, in a baking dish large enough to hold them.
Flip over the pear, put a piece of butter and crumble the blue cheese into the cavity left by the core.
Roast in an oven, at 375°F, for 20 minutes.
This can be served with Classic Roast Chicken, either hot or in at room temperature!
